Songwriting Workshops

James frequently plants himself in a school or community for a week at a time, and can turn a fresh-baked, collaborative collection of songs into a live concert and a recording! His workshops can be customized to meet the needs of students, seniors, or the community at large. It is also available for teacher or corporate training! No previous musical experience is necessary. Participants learn, through writing songs together, that open-mindedness, listening and courage are key components of collaboration and creativity. Contact James to find out more.

Songwriting in the Schools

James has developed a program for songwriting in the schools called Rhyme Capsules. His workshops have created so many budding songwriters, that if he keeps it up he'll have put himself out of work in a few years! Click here for details!

Songwriting Weekends

Katherine Wheatley, one of Canada's finest singer/songwriters, began co-writing songs with James not long after she moved to Guelph. Going through the writing process together led them to develop workshops for adults on the craft of songwriting.

Beginning with their highly successful "winter songwriting weekends" here in Guelph, they went on to teach at Canadore College at the Parry Sound and North Bay campuses. They also added summer Guelph sessions, and took their workshops on the road to other communities. The workshops for adults are designed to be stimulating and beneficial regardless of the age and experience of the participants. Professionals and amateurs, veteran and aspiring writers, and some who have never written a song before have taken part. Group sessions, one-on-one mentoring, song sharing, a songwriting assignment and a closing performance of the new works, all in a warm and relaxing environment makes these weekends very full and very fulfilling for all.
